Tour overview

This unique tour follows the course of the Ebro River, the longest in Spain, from its source in the Cantabrian Mountains to the world-famous wine-growing region of La Rioja. You will start by following the flowing mountain stream through green pastures and valleys, impressive canyons, vast vineyards, pretty and secluded villages nestled in between the mountains.

As you ride, you’ll see how the landscape changes as the River Ebro bends and curves through the earth on its way towards Spain’s northeast coast. After five days of spectacular riding, you will arrive in La Rioja, home of some of the finest wines in Spain. La Rioja is dotted with ancient villages, castles, and wineries, where everyone and everything seems to be involved somehow in viticulture.

Ride Uncrowded Routes & Varying Terrain

Cantabria is a well-known destination for cyclists given its incredible landscapes and opportunities for riders of all levels of ability. There are some wonderfully flat routes as well as some more challenging climbs that allow you to mix and match and tailor your tour to your taste and ability level.

Tour destination

Cantabria sits on Spain’s most northern coastline overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, and borders three other autonomous communities, Castilla-y-León, Asturias and The Basque Country. It is one of Spain’s greenest regions and therefore boasts some incredibly beautiful landscapes, including soaring mountains, lush green valleys and dramatic coastlines. It also hosts parts of the Picos de Europa National Park, which extends across the nearby provinces of Asturias and León and is home to two of Spain’s most elusive creatures, the brown bear and the Iberiean wolf! This epic variety of terrain offers the perfect opportunity for all cycling disciplines and abilities, with long and gradual, short and steep, and even some long and steep climbs! Wherever you are in Cantabria, the striking contrast of the vineyards in La Rioja and towering rocky peaks makes for an incredible backdrop to any trip, especially in your living and breathing the experience from the saddle of a bike!

  • Terrain

Cantabria is perhaps best known for the Picos de Europa National Park that spans over 670 square kilometres and is home to 11 villages nestled between the high peaks. Here we’ll also find meadows and lakes, gorges and impressive forests, as well as an abundance of fauna such as deer, vultures and even bears. Cantabria is also home to some of Spain's most mythical climbs and the World Tour La Vuelta passes through here every year.

Also known as Green Spain, there are many nature reserves and many sports enthusiasts flock here every year to take advantage of the amazing array of landscapes and conditions, from surfing to skiing. Day 2 of your self-guided tour from River Ebro to La Rioja is the perfect introduction to the area, as you ride through some beautifully green and unspoilt scenery.

The route starts by heading east through the lush green mountain pastures of the Cantabrian Mountains, along the shores of the Ebro Reservoir before turning south and passing by the eleventh century Santuario de Montesclaros, a secluded monastery surrounded by forests and overlooking the nearby Ebro valley.

You will then rejoin the Ebro River in the Valley of Valderredible and follow its course until reaching your hotel in the small town of Polientes.
