Tour overview

Cycling through the Italian regions of Matera and Puglia takes you to several UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Begin in Matera, a wonderful city literally carved into the soft limestone rock. Then visit Alberobello’s picturesque Trulli. The tour follows the eastern Mediterranean’s physical and cultural influences all the way down to the far south.

As you alternate between the elegant white-washed villages in an unforgettable experience in the heart of the Mediterranean, olive groves and vineyards dominate the landscape as far as the eye can see. The tour concludes in Lecce’s alleys, a true jewel of Baroque architecture.

This self-guided tour includes GPS tracks and detailed maps of all routes so you can travel at your own pace. Our support van transports all of your luggage from hotel to hotel. If you have any problems, the helpful team will be there to help.

Tour itinerary

Your guide to a perfect cycling tour

Matera to Alberobello
  • Distance
    75 km
  • Altitude Gain
    620 m

From the ravines of Matera to the typical Trulli of Alberobello.

Leave Matera and Basilicata behind and enter Puglia, where you’ll find yourself on the Murgia plateau, surrounded by green and colourful fields in the spring and golden yellow in the summer. In Gioia del Colle, admire the beautiful Norman-Swabian Castle, which houses the interesting Archaeological Museum, but don’t miss the fantastic cheeses such as scamorza, stracciatella, and the delectable burrata.

The path then takes us through the countryside of Putignano, where we recommend taking a short detour to visit the rural sanctuary of Barsento, which was built in the sixth century with simple and soft shapes that blend in perfectly with the surrounding landscape.

The day concludes in Alberobello, among its friendly and lively alleys. Alberobello is famous throughout the world for its Trulli, or cone-shaped rural houses built without cement mortar using the tholos technique and plastered with very white lime. Born for practical and economic reasons, they are now a symbol and a source of wealth for the region, having been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. And you’ll be staying in an ancient Trullo for the night.
