DISCOVER THE AREA’S RICH HISTORY AND CULTURE

The Moselle River flows across northeastern France and western Germany. This tour picks it up in Trier, near the French-German border, and follows the immaculate Moselle cycle path, which in total spans an incredible 311 km! The route is flat, well sign-posted and generally free of any cars, making it a very safe and pleasurable experience.

The Moselle River Self-Guided Bike Tour is ideal for wine lovers, as the route runs straight through German wine country and alongside vineyards. Why not stop off at one of the local taverns on your way and sample some of the local produce? Unsurprisingly, the fruity Moselle white wine is the local speciality. This is a favourite destination among anyone who has visited before, and once you’ve been here, you’ll have no doubt why.

Take your time and ride at your own pace through this marvellous region of southwestern Germany.

Tour destination

Moselle Valley

The Moselle River meanders gently through one of Germany’s most beautiful regions. The lush green landscape, dotted with romantic villages and healthy vineyards, is a haven for anyone who enjoys outdoor activities such as hiking, canoeing and of course, cycling. At some points, the river cuts straight through the mountains, emphasising the contrast between the gently flowing river and the magnificent terrain that surrounds it. Look out for hill-top castles, such as the Reichsburg above Cochem, mediaeval towns such as Bernkastel-Kues with its wonderfully preserved marketplace, and countless breathtaking examples of mother nature at her finest. This area is perfect for a relaxed cycling holiday and a real feast for the senses.

  • Weather

The weather in the Moselle Valley region of Germany is generally mild all year round, with warm summers of around 20ºC and cool winters, with temperatures rarely dropping below 0ºC. Spring, summer and autumn offer the most pleasant cycling conditions with little rainfall, which will allow you to see and enjoy the area in all its glory.

  • Terrain

As the route follows the course of the River Moselle, it offers the perfect conditions for a relatively flat and easy riding experience. The majority of the cycle path is free of cars and is in great condition. You will ride less than 50 km per day as the tour has been designed so that most riders can achieve this daily distance.

  • Culture

One of the dominant cultures and industries in this area is viticulture, or wine.
