The most important thing for this trip is that you have fun and rest well. So, with this in mind, we’ll be staying in a rural house or converted monastery and tasting wines from the surrounding vineyards whilst mingling with the locals and discovering the authentic Murcia from the soil to the sun.
This holiday is more than just cycling, as its title suggests. This tour is a chance to discover Murcia and embrace the local culture and gastronomy, which of course involves celebrating the annual wine harvest, a real fiesta in its own right!
Murcia sits on the Mediterranean coast to the South of more widely known cycling locations, such as Calpe or Alicante. But guess what - Murcia boasts great roads, nice beaches and a self-sufficient authentic culture. It is also slightly warmer here which makes it an excellent spot for all-season cycling. What's more, you can explore less crowded towns with impressive architecture, some welcoming villages and unspoilt wine culture.
Murcia’s Mediterranean climate makes it the perfect location for year-round cycling, as well as being a wonderful holiday destination. The summer months can get very hot with temperatures rising to over 30 ºC, so avoid this season if you’re not a fan of the heat, or in the mood for getting up at the crack of dawn for a cooler ride. The rest of the year however offers great riding conditions, with lots of sunshine and very little rain.
Murcia is well-known for its coastline, but its potential for a cycling holiday is somewhat still untapped. It’s a mystery to us. The region’s diverse terrain, with flats, mountains and a host of hill climbs are perfect for cyclists looking to push their fitness to the next level. It is not the Pyrenees, but there is still so much to do and see in terms of landscape and training to sink your pedals into.
Spain’s culture, from languages to landscapes, is rich and diverse. North, south, east, west and central Spain all have a distinguishing culture and traditions, none of which ever disappoint. Murcia boasts some incredible examples of Gothic, Renaissance and Moorish-style architecture, as well as natural parks and protected nature reserves with an incredibly rich variety of flora and fauna. And there is so much to do… Head to Cartagena on the coast, or the city of Murcia for some tapas and a glass of wine under the orange trees.
Today’s highlight
Our cycling tour starts on day 2 with a stunning ride inland through the Campo de Cartagena, Murcia’s agricultural heartland, and into the Sierra Espuña. Covered in forestland, this protected area is one of Spain’s most outstandingly beautiful natural parks and a real favourite among nature enthusiasts. In the evening, we’ll stay in a converted monastery in the foothills of the Sierra Espuña Natural Park and make the most of our authentic Murcian experience.
