La Vuelta a España is no stranger to this area, which is well known among professional riders. This is a very special location and an unmissable opportunity to ride through one of the most beautiful landscapes in Spain.
The city of Málaga and its nearby coastal villages are well known among many beach-loving tourists. However Málaga has so much more to offer if you step away from its sun-kissed coastline. The region is steeped in history and culture, a hotbed for art and literature throughout the twentieth century, home to poets such as Emilio Prados and Federico García Lorca. The cuisine in Málaga is also varied given the influence of the many cultures that have passed over the land, as well as the modern international influence on the city and surrounding area. Along the beaches it is common to find a lot of fish and seafood roasting on outdoor barbecues preparing grilled sardines and squid, the perfect way to spend a lunchtime.
Málaga enjoys a typically Mediterranean climate, with hot, dry summers and pleasant, mild winters. It is the ideal location for winter cycling tours for this reason, with many days reaching into the high teens (degrees celsius) thanks to the warm sunshine. Málaga can also get windy throughout the year, so make sure to pack your gilet in case the breeze turns chilly!
The region of Málaga has varied terrain given that it sits between the Mediterranean Sea and the dry inland regions of Andalusia. The hills behind Málaga capital city create an iconic backdrop to life on the coast and invite exploration. The hills are full of iconic climbs such as Puerto del Torre and El Torcal de Antequera, an impressive natural park with very unusual yet beautiful rock formations.
Málaga city and the surrounding coastline has a rich and varied culture and a history that goes back millennia. The capital’s bright and vibrant art scene is growing, with museums such as the Picasso Museum and the Carmen Thyssen Museum. The region is also a popular location for music concerts and festivals, playing host to world famous artists of every calibre. Traditional Andalusian culture is also very much alive in Málaga. The whole region has a vibrant flamenco scene and tapas culture, which often combine to give you dinner and a show!
Our first long route will head west from the city centre and along the Costa del Sol. We will head inland and explore some of the white-washed hilltop villages sitting behind the coastline such as Coín and Pizarra.
