Sardinia: The Green Coast Cycling Tour

We will meet at the airport and take a transfer to Torre dei Corsari. Nowadays it is a popular village with a famous beach and giant sand dunes, loved by Mediterranean surfers for its impressive waves. Once at the hotel, your guides will brief you on the week again and help you set up your bike. We will then head out for a gentle warm up ride in the afternoon before dinner on the beach. We will spend the night in the Torre Hotel.

We will start our day with a hearty cyclist’s breakfast before heading out on our first ride: the “Costa Verde” (Green Coast). This is the wildest region of Sardinia. It is less populated, less touristy, and has a long mining history. Our route includes a challenging climb to the phantom village of Ingurtosu, before descending once again to Buggerru, our final destination. After some time relaxing in our four-star hotel, we’ll have dinner in one of the local Trattoria.

Today is a good day to start climbing… However, two beautiful downhills with sea views await you until you reach Fontanamare Beach. We’ll then travel 25 kilometres on a flat road to the island of Sant’Antioco, which has been connected to Sardinia’s main land by a bridge since the Roman Empire era. Our dinner will be served in the downtown area of this charming fisherman village, which is rich in traditions.

Today we’ll spend our rides exploring the two south Sardinian islands. We’ll start with the loop of San Pietro island, then take the ferry for 30 minutes to Sant’Antioco island, our final destination for the day. Despite being an island, Sant’Antioco is quite easy to reach: it is, in fact, connected to the main island by an isthmus and an artificial bridge.

We leave Sant’Antioco island via the salt works, which are home to flocks of pink flamingos. We’ll cross the Sulcis countryside through artichoke fields and Carignano vineyards after a stop in the picturesque village of Tratalias vecchia, built around the beautiful Romanesque Cathedral of Santa Maria. The riding day concludes in Teulada at an Agriturismo (holiday farm), where we will be able to sample traditional Sardinian cuisine.

The final leg of our tour starts on a scenic road along the Costa del Sud overlooking the sea. After leaving Sant’Anna Arresi, we’ll ride inland, coming once again to the coast at the picturesque Porto Budello fishing harbour. We’ll ride over rolling hills until we reach Chia, one of the most gorgeous beaches of the whole island. Then there’s just 15 km of peaceful countryside left until the legendary Nora, the Phoenician town conquered by the Romans, one of the most important settlements of the ancient Mediterranean.

After breakfast and a one hour transfer to Cagliari, we’ll start cycling from downtown towards the Molentargius Park, also known as the Saline Park, where you will forget that you are surrounded by the city thanks to the incredible flora, fauna, and gravel tracks. Our ride then continues on to Poetto beach. We will stop here for a gelato or a light lunch by the beach, before finishing our journey through Poetto in the Marina Piccola. We’ll continue to ride through the historic districts of Cagliari along the bike path from Poetto Beach to the historic centre. In the afternoon, there will be some time for a spot of shopping before celebrating our trip with a final dinner in the vibrant old town.

It’s time to say goodbye! After breakfast and swapping stories about the whole tour, our team will help you with bikes and luggage before catching the transfer to Cagliari Airport, just 10 minutes from the city centre.
