Year round sunshine and epic climbs

Riding your bike in Calpe is an experience you'll never forget!

Look no further for breathtaking mountain scenery, quiet roads, excellent road surfaces for cycling and nearly year-round sunshine. It is the reason why many of the pro teams base themselves here. Cycling in Calpe and the Costa Blanca provides all of these opportunities. March and April are peak months, but with over 300 days of sunshine each year, a Calpe cycling trip is appealing at any time of year. The region is frequently featured in the Vuelta a Espana, and Calpe is a popular winter cycling training camp destination for many professional teams.

Roads that will leave you breathless

Cycling is a popular mode of transportation in the area around Calpe. Your journey will take you along tranquil highways, and the terrain is so good that it frequently appears in stages of world tours, such as the Vuelta de Espana. The Marina Alta mountains hosted the entire Vuelta a Espana stage 20 in 2016.

In addition to long, steady ascents of up to 15 kilometres in length with an average incline of 5-6 percent and reach elevations of up to 1000 metres, there are also shorter but more explosive ascents, with ascents as steep as 25 percent. If you’re up for a challenge, try the Sierras of Bernia and Aitana, which include Cumbre del Sol and Coll de Rates. The hairpins and tight corners in the valleys are a great place to hone your bike handling skills and if you’re looking for more of a leisurely ride, the coastal roads are a perfect place for you to cruise along at your own pace. It is also a great place to practise your sprints if you’re wanting to test your speed.

Discover cycling routes in Calpe

Most of the cycling routes in the Costa Blanca area will consist of flat sections, gentle drags, and steady climbing. If you want to avoid climbing and have a long and easy ride, head to Gandia or even Cullera and further north.

Choose your cycling routes carefully or join one of our guided tours to learn all the ins and outs and the best places to ride. It is a wise decision to take it easy at first rather than attempting to conquer all climbs on the first day of your cycling vacation or training camp.

Here is a leg busting route for you that takes it all in. El Campello – La Fustera – Coll De Rates – Guadalest – Alto de Finestrat – El Campello and back. It is 190km with 2800m of elevation but don’t worry, there is a fair bit of descending too. The first 50km until Altea and Calpe are mostly flat and will give you a chance to warm up for all the climbing that this route has in store for you.
