Roads that will leave you breathless
Cycling is a popular mode of transportation in the area around Calpe. Your journey will take you along tranquil highways, and the terrain is so good that it frequently appears in stages of world tours, such as the Vuelta de Espana. The Marina Alta mountains hosted the entire Vuelta a Espana stage 20 in 2016.
In addition to long, steady ascents of up to 15 kilometres in length with an average incline of 5-6 percent and reach elevations of up to 1000 metres, there are also shorter but more explosive ascents, with ascents as steep as 25 percent. If you’re up for a challenge, try the Sierras of Bernia and Aitana, which include Cumbre del Sol and Coll de Rates. The hairpins and tight corners in the valleys are a great place to hone your bike handling skills and if you’re looking for more of a leisurely ride, the coastal roads are a perfect place for you to cruise along at your own pace. It is also a great place to practise your sprints if you’re wanting to test your speed.
