CATALONIA'S GOLDEN ROUTE

Three intensive days in the Catalan countryside, pedalling through landscapes where plains and mountains alternate in harmony with forests and fields. We’ll go through the lush Montseny Natural Park, Biosphere Reserve, and we’ll climb up to the highest point in the province of Barcelona, the Turó de l’Home, before continuing north to reach the monumental and gastronomic city of Vic. The delightful Catalan villages of Rupit and Tavertet will take us deep into the colourful display offered by the beech tree forests in the Volcanic Area of La Garrotxa, and before we reach Girona we’ll climb the legendary Rocacorba, the pole of attraction for many professional cyclists in the region of Girona.

Destination

CATALONIA - A tradition for cycling

he love of biking knows no bounds. On a hand bike, for example, you can explore the Terra Alta or Girona greenways. Catalonia, the land of great cyclists and magnificent mountain passes, gives you roads, paths and greenways for a bicycle excursion for all levels. For decades, the hundreds of cycle touring associations in the country have been creating space in the Catalan local road network. On weekends, the curviest roads and those with steep hills are the perfect place for bike-lovers to cruise around with friends for the sheer pleasure of the sport. The most famous peaks, such as Turó de l'Home, Coll del Pradell and Coll de Collfred, are some of the goals for the mountaineering cyclists. On the Costa Brava, the Costa Daurada or Costa Barcelona there are equally beautiful routes for groups looking for a flatter ride. There is a reward halfway through: a good pa amb tomàquet (bread with tomato) with sausage in some of the traditional roadside restaurants.

Weather

Catalonia offers lots of that Spanish sun. With that, being up North of the peninsula, you'll get fresher rides during spring and autumn months as you can feel the proximity of the Pyrenees. Make sure you grab your gilet for some wind and rain protection for those unlucky days. And bring sun cream for the rest.

Terrain

Catalonia is a remarkably rough country! Barely there any large flat area, mostly some river deltas. The rest is hills and mountains. North of Catalonia is marked by the Pyrenees and very much all of the upper part of the country is their foothills that often times are pretty high and steep. Then there is seaside ridge, the Cordillera Litoral, that runs along the coast and also gets as high as almost 2000 meters. The inland is also totally hilly with some remarkable places like the Montserrat mountain. So to say, combined with perfect road network this makes a real cycling and especially climbing paradise.

Culture

Catalan culture, despite being less renowned than it’s more famous Spanish cousin, boasts a huge history as well as it’s own unique traditions and cuisine. Taking the time to discover some authentic Catalan traditions as well as those well known Spanish ones will only make your trip to Catalonia an even better one. And cycling is big deal here. La Vuelta has a Catalan root. And there is La Vuelta a Catalunya as well. And yes, insane amount of people are cycling for sport.
