THE FOOD VALLEY - EMILIA ROMAGNA - ITALY
On this tour, you will ride through one of the world's richest regions in terms of culinary traditions. Many products that make the foundation of the renowned Italian cuisine have their roots in this area. Starting with the Parmesan cheese! The area is abundant with Italian historical heritage. Impressive hilltop castles, like that of Bardi and Compiano, as well as cosy stone-paved little towns, make it astonishing to explore. Covering it on the bike, stopping for a drink or a snack in beautiful places, will make you immerse in the environment and feel it to the fullest. Here, road cycling conditions are world-class. Twisting small roads with good tarmac and little traffic, combined with the landscapes, make a perfect ride. Don't think it's too easy though – there are some mountain passes and hills to climb, so the terrain is anything but flat.
In the summer months it's can get really hot, so be sure to have strong sun protection and hydrate well. Spring and autumn are the best time to visit for cycling – you can expect warm and mild conditions.
While most of the terrain closer to Parma falls under the definition of rolling hills, when you arrive in the Apennine mountains, expect many challenging passes well over 1000 meters above sea level.
Culture and especially gastronomy is the main element that sets this area aside from anything you have seen before. It is a Food Valley for a reason. Make sure to explore it, from high-end restaurants to street food.
