CALPE - COSTA BLANCA - SPAIN

Travelling cyclists are typically looking for the superlative in two key criteria: climate, and terrain. Local delicacies, cost of living (and eating), and entertainment are all usually secondary.So, it’s helpful for the Costa Blanca that in 1986 the World Health Organisation recommended the area as “one of the most equitable in the world,” applauding it for being neither too hot nor too cold.The area boasts an incredible 325 sunny days a year. Cyclists tend to visit in the months between October and May when max temperatures are around 16°C to 25°C. The months from June to September can reach 30° quite easily and can get a bit hot for bike riding.Average rainy days vary from one a month mid-summer to six in December, with the spring months hovering at around four.On to the terrain, which boasts the beauty of variability.There are plenty of long, flat lanes – often accompanied by the zesty scent of orange groves.These provide an ideal playground for team time trial training – something CCC Team (previously BMC) had been doing a couple of weeks before Cycling Weekly arrived for a week of riding in Spring, leaving behind the evidence in the form of chalk lines drawn on the roads.

Weather

Mild weather all round permits to ride non-stop. It gets hot in the summer but the winter are very gentle with not too much rainfall. Grab your gilet though as winds can get nasty sometimes!

Terrain

It's definitely an excellent climbing playground, though climbs are rather gentle. You can go as hard or light as you wish. Many climbs are famed in Vuelta a España. And yes there are smooth flats as well for the full variety of training.

Culture

Costa Blanca is home to very welcoming people and a good example of Spanish and Mediterranean culture. Foodies will be happy over here with the abundance of the freshest sea food. Valencia is the home of paella in the end! In your spare time there's no shortage of places of interest to visit be it a castle or a winery.

Puerto de Ebo

Puerto de Ebo follows the CV-712 from Vall d'Ebo, heading over the pas towards the Costa Blanca. This is a short and fairly easy climb, with regular gradients. It is very popular with professional cyclists staying in nearby towns, who include Ebo as part of long circular rides.

Port de Tudons

Port de Tudons is one of the most popular cycling climbs in the Valencia Community, and is a favoured training ground of professional riders over the winter. It has featured several times in the Vuelta a España, although often quite early in the stage rather than being a decisive climb.The gradients on Port de Tudons are gentle and consistent, but the length makes it a moderately challenging climb; although one which is best included in a longer route rather than done by itself. The scenery is very picturesque, particularly on the lower slopes with views of the spectacular Puig Campana mountain.
