UNCROWDED ROUTES FLOWING THROUGH GREAT SPANISH LANDSCAPES

A unique trip, following the River Ebro, the longest in Spain, as it flows from its source in the Cantabrian Mountains. Begin your journey from the top, following the flowing mountain stream through green pastures and valleys, imposing canyons, vineyards, past pretty and unknown villages. As you cycle, notice the changes in the landscape and the River Ebro itself. Finally, we arrive in La Rioja, home of the finest Spanish wines – a sea of vineyards dotted with ancient villages, castles and wineries. This is a magnificent trip for those who wish to visit parts of Spain the tourists never see.

A superb ride down the River Ebro from the Cantabrian Mountains to the vineyards of La Rioja

Highlights of your trip

Self-guided tours are great for the more independent rider. All luggage is transported to the next hotel by a support car which allows you to go at your own pace and just enjoy the ride. Even though the tour is self-guided, there is still a support team available if needed for any emergencies, route guidance, or advice.

COMFORTABLE ACCOMMODATION

Enjoy a variety of accommodation along the tour, all of a comfortable 3/4 star standard with en-suites and breakfast at every stop. From unique and rural, to larger hotels with pools and facilities, you won't be disappointed.

RIDE UNCROWDED ROUTES & VARYING TERRAIN

The Cantabrian Mountains may be less spoken about that Pyrenees, but these national parks are of unique beauty and special interest for cyclists. There are some long, gradual routes and also some gruelling short walls to conquer on a bike.

Destination

CANTABRIA - SPAIN

Cantabria is one of the most mountainous regions in Spain, with great climbs from its coastline right up to the borders with Castilla-y-León, Asturias and The Basque Country. Its most famous and highest range is the Picos de Europa mountains, situated on the border with Asturias, but there are also some great climbs in The Collados de Asón range - in the east of the region - and at Alto Campoo. There are all sorts of climbs here: long and gradual, short and steep and also a couple of long and steep ascents! Cantabria is one of the most picturesque parts of Spain - at least when it is sunny. The vibrant green scenery and rolling vineyards of the famous La Rioja wine region are particularly impressive when juxtaposed with high rocky peaks, as it is in the Picos de Europa. However, elsewhere it is also very pleasurable to ride, with the scenery very different to most mountainous regions in Europe.

Weather

Northern Spain boasts nice and cool summers. So this is where you'd like to be headed when it's grilling hot in most of Spain and Europe. Autumn and Spring are great seasons as well, but bring your jacket!

Terrain

Cantabria's landmark is iconic National Park of Picos de Europa known for deep valleys and sharp peaks. It is home to some of Spain's most mythical climbs and La Vuelta passes here every year.

Culture

Cantabria is a region which seems thoroughly Spanish, and yet a tourist can't find all the things Spain is most famous for there. For the uninitiated, as in, those who have never visited the country, it is not full of flamenco dancers, bullfighting, donkeys and perpetual sunshine.
