Mallorca’s reputation as a cycling tour destination is solid. Literally. The Serra de Tramuntana mountain range, where cycling gold can be found, stretches from the Coll Se Creu to the Cap de Formentor at the opposite end of the island.

Sunshine, challenging climbs, perfectly engineered roads, the Mediterranean, and a local community that understands the needs of visiting cyclists. For the adventurous, there is a network of lanes and double tracks that run through the agricultural lands and historic villages to the south of the mountains.

Being an island, it’s always simple to find a spot for a sunset, tapas and refreshments while planning the next day’s itinerary. Mallorca is a truly beautiful island packed with wonderful places to see and things to do.

TERRAIN SUITED TO EVERY FORM OF CYCLING

The jagged peaks of the Island’s northern mountains appear almost insurmountable from a distance. It is impressive that the original builders were able to lay any roads at all; more so that they did so beautifully is a real feat of engineering. Although Sa Calobra gets the most attention, Puig Major, Coll de Soller, the lower Femenia, and Sa Creu all deserve to be recognised.

Looking for some flatter land? Take a ride over to the east or south roads of the island for some incredibly scenic flat routes. Discover the serene, traffic-free s’Albufera Natura Park or the historical sites on the Port de Pollença loop. Your planned route can be as long or as short as you need. The roads are yours to pedal.

QUITE POSSIBLY THE SUNNIEST DESTINATION TO CYCLE IN

How does 300 days of sunshine a year sound to you? Mallorca is blessed with mild winters and sun-soaked summers, making it a great year-round location for cycling tours. If you want to escape the cold and bleak winter months in the Northern Hemisphere, there is no better place to sneak in some sun. The best time of year to visit the island for a cycling trip is either side of the peak summer season.

May to June and September to October provide the best temperatures for cycling, whilst the roads remain quiet from holiday-makers. July and August is Mallorca’s peak season. The temperatures can be scorching with high humidity levels, and tourists add traffic obstacles. If you visit in these months, make sure you set your alarm and hit the roads before the heat and people rise. November through to February has professional teams descending on the island for training camps so you might be able to spot some of your favourite cycling teams and riders during this time. Some restaurants and bars may be closed due to Mallorca’s low season for tourism. However, the roads will be quiet and you’ll be riding through the incredible blooming Spring blossoms.

SA CALOBRA

Sa Calobra is the island's most difficult climb. Measuring 9.4 kilometres in length with an average gradient of 7% and featuring no less than 26 hairpin turns between the sea and the famous 270-degree neck tie bend before the top. You'll be hard pressed to find better views.

CAP DE FORMENTOR

Cap de Formentor is Mallorca's northeast wild peninsula, about 20km from Port de Pollenca and a beautiful and accessible location for most cyclists. The dramatic scenery provides a breathtaking backdrop for any cycling adventure. Navigate the rugged cliffside and untouched pine trees while taking in a breath of fresh air.

TRAMUNTANA COASTAL ROAD

The Tramuntana Coastal Road runs 110km along the west coastline from Andratx in the south to Pollensa in the north. You will climb the highest point on Mallorca, Puig Major, and pass through local villages – perfect for a coffee and cake stop.

Sa Calobra is Mallorca’s main gem in terms of cycling and arguably the most challenging climb on the island. If you come there for a week (who would go to Mallorca for even less at all?) then you better hold off Sa Calobra for midweek - first to get in shape and second - well, just don’t rush to the main dish! Getting in shape will just make you enjoy this amazing ride much more. But be sure, whatever your plans are, the day you’ll head to Sa Calobra is going to be The day.
